- Minimised scar formation
- Minimised postoperative wound pain, scarcely any swelling
- Decontamination of the irradiated tissue
- Effective protection from infections
General information on the diode LASER
The diode LASER is minimally invasive and has a series of advantages over conventional treatments (such as electrosurgery):
- Reduced bleeding during surgery
- Fewer sutures
- Less postoperative swelling
- Less scarring
- Bactericidal effect of the LASER
- Less need for antibiotics and antiphlogistics
- Less pain and controlled wound healing
WavelengthsAll of the diode LASER’s on the market with wavelengths in the near infrared spectrum (810 to 980 nm) are strongly absorbed by melanin and haemoglobin (oxyhaemoglobin HBO2). They are absorbed to a lesser degree by water. These lasers are therefore absorbed in particular by blood itself.
Of all of these specific wavelengths, the wavelength of 980 nm is absorbed the most by water. Its effect is therefore not as dependent on the availability of blood vessels in the irradiated area as with other diode LASER’s.
Safety regulationsIn general, the LASER safety guidelines in IEC 60825-1 should be observed. Protective LASER goggles should therefore be worn by everybody near the LASER (such as the dentist, assistant and patient). The LASER safety goggles are delivered with the GENTLEray 980. KaVo offers regular LASER courses that enable you to use the LASER with confidence and skill.
Comparison with the Key LASERThe focus of the GENTLEray 980 diode LASER is on treating oral soft tissue with a positive haemostatic effect, and decontaminating irradiated areas as in endodontics, for example. In contrast, the KEY III is suitable for the treatment of soft tissue and hard tissue (enamel and bone), and in periodontology for gentle calculus removal. It therefore has a wider indication spectrum.

Upgrading set from Classic to Premium
With the optional upgrade kit, the GENTLEray 980 "Classic" can be easily upgraded to the GENTLEray 980 "Premium":
- New software
- Greater performance (diode array)
- Peristaltic pump
- Second handpiece with water cooling
- Second fibre with 200 µm
- Colour display
- With a laser is upgraded by suppliers authorised by KaVo
The Premium version has numerous advantages over the Classic
Greater performance
- Greater irradiation efficiency accelerates procedures with shorter irradiation times
- Optional pulsed application can reduce the thermal side-effects taking into account tissue-specific relaxation time (cooling phase)
- Greater efficiency
- Faster healing
With water cooling
- Reduction of thermal side-effects decreases pain during and after treatment
- Reduced carbonisation and coagulation zones
- After SRP, residual blood is rinsed from the periodontal pocket making laser-supported sulcus sterilisation and de-epithelisation more effective
- Reduction of odour during treatment
- Improved patient comfort
- Faster healing
